Edward John Bassett
Edward John Bassett, aged 97, known as Jack Bassett, he was born in Christchurch and was the son of Samuel Kennedy Bassett and Jane Dixon Bassett. He was in South Town House from 1920 to 1923. Following College he went to Canterbury University in 1924. In 1927 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in No. 1 Bn Infantry, Territorials and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1939. He served as a Special Constable in Christchurch during the depression disturbances in 1930. He started his career as an office boy with John Burns & Co. in Christchurch in 1923 and steadily progressed through the company becoming accountant in Auckland in 1936, Secretary and Assistant General Manager of the Auckland branch in 1955. He retired in 1972. His interests and involvements were wide and varied. He was Master of the Arangi Masonic Lodge in 1947-48, Chairman of the Auckland Junior Chamber of Commerce 1940-1941, Chairman of the Auckland Senior Chamber of Commerce for several years, a director of Steel Distributors for War Steel for 3 years, President of the Auckland Hardware Merchants for 9 years, President of the Auckland Wallboard Association for 5 years and a director of the National Creditman's Association. Beyond his professional life his interests were his family, golf, bowls and his garden. He was a volunteer worker with Care & Craft for many years. He died in Auckland on July 19, 2003 and is survived by his son and three daughters, several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
