Arnice Bassett Beard
NEWPORT NEWS - Arnice Ethel Bassett Beard passed away peacefully on Jan. 1, 2005, in the Newport Convalescent Center. She was born in Isle of Wight County on April 17, 1910, and moved to Newport News in 1918. She attended Newport News Public Schools and graduated in 1927. At the age of 10 she learned to play the violin, and music was a continual source of pleasure in her life. She enjoyed sharing her musical talent in many church and community functions. She was a multi-talented lady who was employed as an executive secretary in the NNS&DDCo and the Newport News Public School System from which she retired in 1975. During the 60's she taught kindergarten at Wythe Presbyterian Church. There was nothing pretentious about this dear lady, and she treated everyone with love and respect. Being of the Christian faith, she had served selflessly in several local Methodist churches as a Sunday School teacher, children's choir director, circle leader, Women's Missionary Society leader, and historian. For 51 years she has worshiped and fellowshipped at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Her bonds of friendship there have been a great support and comfort to her and her family. It was during her public school years that she met the love of her life, Frank Harmon Beard Sr. They were married in 1934 and shared 36 wonderful years together in Hampton. They created a loving home in which to reaise their two children, Frank and Louise. She was a gracious hostess and made her home a welcoming place for all who visited. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Ethel Spady Bassett; her husband, Frank Harmon Beard Sr.; her brother, Stafford Bassett Sr. and his wife, Inda; her sister, Eunice Leyland and her husband, Walter Sr. She is survived by her son, Frank H. Beard Jr. and his wife, Anne; her daughter, Louise Woodard and her husband, Thomas; her four grandchildren, Mark Woodard and his wife, Amy, Alison Ewing and her husband, Tim, Bronwyn Beard, and Grant Beard. She is also survived by her great-grandsons, John, Seth, and Philip Woodard; a devoted niece, Shirlett Garrett Maxson (Mrs. Cecil); and three equally devoted nephews and their spouses, Walter and Shirley Leyland, Thomas and Jody Leyland, and Stafford and Mary Lee Bassett. The family would like to thank Warwick Forest Assited Living and The Newport Convalescent Center for the loving, respectful care that they bestowed on Arnice during the last months of her life. A special thanks is extended to Dr. Wayne Haga of Hampton Family Practice for his years of tender, professional care. A service to celebrate Arnice's life will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. and burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Newport News. Local arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Jan. 4, from 6:30 to *;30 p.m. at the funeral home.
