Hon. Simon S. Bass
Provisional Judge of the St. Louis Court of Criminal Correction and
President of the Board of Charity Commissioners of St. Louis.
Hon. Simon S. Bass, of whom the above is a most strking likeness, is Judge of the St. Louis Court of Criminal Correction by appointmenbt of the St. Louis Circuit Court at the suggestion of Judge James R. Claiborne, who was called to the State Capitol by the Legislative Judiciary Committee. Judge Bass?s appointment though temporary is a well meritied compliement, and a graceful recognition of this abilities as a jurist. The Hon. gentleman is a member of the well-known Law firm of Martins and Bass. He is devoted to works of charity, and was by Mayor E.A. Noonan appointed President of the St. Louis Board of Charity Commissioners, which position he still holds; immediately prior to said appointment, he was Private Secretary to the Mayor: he is also the Chairman of the Law Committee of the Grand Lodge of the Ancient Order United Workmen. Mr. bass was borne at Baltimore, Md., and has been a resident of this city since 1880. The gentlemen has been counsel in some of the most notable criminal cases in Missouri during the last ten years. He was attorney for the Knights of Labor in the great Street-Car strike of 1885-86-87, and was the ?Reading Clerk? of the ?First Judiciary Convention? held in this State at Springfield, Mo. Mr. Bass is a young man yet, and with such a record has a brilliant future.

Bass & Brock
This well-known firm is composed of Messrs. Simon S. Bass and Charles Brock, prominent in the practice of civil and criminal law, the former being attended to by Mr. Brock and the latter by Mr. Bass. Mr. S.S. Bass was bor in Baltimore, Md., graduating from the public schools and High School of that city, and later from some noted educational institutions of the State. When quite a young man he came to St. Louis and began the practice of law, and has lived here ever since. He has been on one side or the other of some of the most notable cases appearing in the criminal courts, and has always handled his side of the question in a most satisfactory manner and displaying makred cleverness and ability. Mr. Bass has taken a prominent part in politifcs, but never, however, being an officeholder. He was for many years chairman of the Charity Committee of this city and also Provisoinal Judge of the Criminal Court. His main practice has been in criminal law, having had cases in enarly all of the Federal courts.
