James Edward Bass, 76, retired farmer of the Ashland section of Lee County, died in a local hospital at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Gum Branch Baptist Church, the Rev. R.L. Deaton officiating. Brown Pennington Funeral Home will direct. Surviving are the widow, the former Alene Chapman; four daughters, Mrs. Glanton Smith of Hartsville, Mrs. Billie Lynch of Pine Ridge, Mrs. John Newsome of Clyde and Mrs. L. C. Atkinson of Ellenboro, N.C.; four sons, Charles E. Bass of Hartsville, Rt. 4; Carroll Bass and J.E. Bass Jr., both of Johnson City, Tenn., and W.E. Bass of Ashland; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Eli Rhodes of Darlington and Mrs. Emma Steen of Syracuse, N.Y., and a brother, W.M. Bass of Rt. 4, Hartsville.
