      Peter Bass

DIED ? on the 13th ult. at Smithland, Kentucky, on his return from Nashville, Tenn. PETER BASS, Esq of Boon county, Missouri, in the 60th year of his age.
The death of this gentleman has made a vacuum in society, not soon to be filled, and has closed a career of singular honor and usefulness. Endowed by nature with an uncommon share of sagacity and sound sense, he had acquired, by intercourse with the world, a greater practical knowledge of mankind than falls to the lot of most men. His plans through life were, therefore, generally formed with judgement and executed with zeal and ability. In early life, he had imbibed the idea that the practice of the virtues of industry, honesty and rational economy could not fail to insure success, and the respect and esteem of mankind. The history of his life is triumphant testimony of the correctness of his views. His opinions and counsel were frequently sought after by those about to embark on the dubious ocean of life, and no man ever imparted counsel with more pleasure. He pointed out to many the road which led to fortune. To the meritorious young man, struggling against the ills of poverty, he never failed, when it was in his power, not only to give his advice gratuitously, but also his friendship and substantial patronage.
In his transactions with the world, he was liberal, upright and honorable, so much so, that he is known to have passed through the various conflicting interests of life without make a personal enemy. In his intercourse with society, he was affable, courteous and popular. As a friend, he was warm-hearted and sincere; as a man and citizen, charitable, benevolent and public spirited; as a husband and father, he was kind-hearted, affectionate and provident. ? Misso. Repub.
