  Notes	William Henry Bassett, son of Thomas Washington and Mary S. Bassett, was born 14 Jan 1827 in Mathews County, Virginia. He died 22 Dec 1903 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth, Virginia. He married (1) a Mathews County girl when young, and she died a year later. He married (2) Permelia W. Roberts, daughter of Archibald and Katherine (Powell) Roberts, on 15 Sep 1859 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Permelia was born 16 Aug 1841 in Nansemond County, Virginia. She died 4 Jan 1917 in Portsmouth, Virginia. She is buried at the Roberts Family Cemetery in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. William was a steam boat captain running from Mathews County to Norfolk, Virginia. He was a captain of the first passenger lines from Norfolk to Richmond, Virginia. He gave it up during the Civil War. William served as a Lt. in Company E, 9 Regiment Virginia Infantry.
