William and Jeremiah both fought in the Indian Wars of 1837-8, enlisting in Cass (Barstow) Co., Georgia. They were both in Capt. Swaggerty's Co. 2nd Georgia Mounted Volunteers. William's pension application states that he was born in Barnwell County, SC 1815/6.
According to his pension records, he moved to Missouri in 1863.

Personally appeared William Bassett of Norman, P.P. Courts of Phelps, State of Missouri who being duly sworn upon his oath, declared as follows - in ans. to Par. 4 "To the best of my knowledge I was 20 or 21 years old when I enlisted was borned in Barnel District, South Carolina. My hight when enlisted was about 5 th 7 in. Complexion fair, dark hair and brown eyes. My occupation was farming. Cant remember exact date of enlistment. The place was either in Cassville, Cass Co. or Kellog Store, Cobb Co, Georgia. Was discharged at Kellog Store. Also cannot sign name. I secured one land warrant while in Gorgia, also one in Fulton County, Arkansas. Do not remember number or date. Perbily I received both warrants in Arkansas. Par. 5. Can not state exact date of birth but was borned in the year of 1816 as near as I can remember. Par. 9. Have never rendered any service in the army or navy other than the one claimed for. DECLARATION OF SURVIVOR FOR PENSION WHO SERVED BETWEEN 1832 AND 1842 INCLUSIVE.

On this 23 day of Jan AD one thousand eight hundred and ninety three, personally appeared before me, a Justice of Peace within the County and State aforesaid, William Bassett, aged 77 years, a resident of Norman, County of Phelps, State of Missouri, who being by me duly sworn according to law, deposes and says: That he is a citizen of the United States and is the identical William Bassett who served under the name of William Bassett, as a private in the company commanded by Captain Swagerty, in the 2nd regiment of Florida, commanded by Colonel Foster in the Seimonle Indian War of 1838-1839. That he enlisted at Cassville, Georgia, on or about the 15 day of Oct A.D. 1838 for the term of 6 months, and was honorably discharged at Kellog Store Ga on or about the 15th day of April A.D. 1839. That he is married, that the maiden name of his wife Lachinda Smith to who he was married at Cassville, state of Georgia on 15 May A.D. 1839; that his wife is now dead, having died on the 9 day of April, A.D. 1887 at Norman, in the State of Mo; that he has not since remarried. That in support and proof of this right to pension he will hereafter submit such evidence as may be required under the rules and regulations prescribed by the Secretary of the Interior if possible and in poer ?. That he has not heretofore made application for pension but received 160 acres of bounty land. That he is not a pensioner of the United States. That since his discharge from said service he has resied as follows, to wit: from 1850 in Ark and from 1865 in Missouri. That he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension-roll of the United States udern the provisions of the Act of July 27th, 1892. His post-office address is Norman, Missouri. W. L. Williford Hamilton Lenox.
Also personally appeared W.L. Williford, residing at St James, Mo and Hamilton Lenox, residing at St James, Mo, persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who, being by me duly sowrn, say they were present and saw William bassett, the claimant, make his mark to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of the said claimnt and their acquaintance with him for 32 years and 28 years, respectively, that he is the identical person he represents himself to be; and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim.

Gentlemen,
One Wm. Bassett a soldier of the Florida War and living near me, asks me to write the department in his interest. He is an old man, now 83 years. Now getting 8 Dol. per month, pention, and thinks he should have more. And when compaired with many others, his claim appears to me to be resonable. I am unable to give his Regiment and Co. But. William Bassett Norman, Phelps Co, MO will catch him and, if here is any thing I can do for the old man, if you will instruct me, I will furnish all necessary information necessary in the matter.
