George and A.H. Rice have purchased the Greenwich house of T.J. Eldridge and will have possession April 1, The house has been conducted for several years by S.W. Bassett. The American House, now conducted by George Rice, has been leased to William Welch, who was formerly in the hotel business here.
Lewis Bissett was born in Canada about 1830. He married Agnes Beardon.

The funeral of S.W. Bassett, late proprietor of the Commercial hotel, was held last Sunday afternoon. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in the village. He was well known, and his genial good nature had won him a host of friends who came from far and near to pay tribute to their departed friend. Rev. A.M. Prentice, pastor of the Memorial Baptist church officiated, and the Odd Fellows? organizations of Fort Edward, Greenwich and Mechanicville attended in a body and accompanied the remains to the Stillwater cemetery where the interment was made. The deceased was a member of Jane McCrea lodge and Canton Fort Edward of Fort Edward.

S.W. Bassett
S.W. Bassett was born in Cornwall, Vermont, December 11, 1858, and is the son of Louis and Agnes (Beardon) Bassett. He was educated in the district schools, and was reared on his father?s farm, where he remained until he was eighteen years of age, when he took a position in a hotel in Orwell, Vt., Here he remained for two years, and then went to Ticonderoga, N.Y., and managed to hotels for T. E. Bailey for seven years. He then went to Troy and became a member of the firm of Dougrey & Bassett, who conducted the Everett House in Troy for three years. Mr. Bassett then accepted a position as paymaster for the state on Section 1, of the Champlain Canal. This position he filled with ability for five years, and during that time was elected Collector of Taxes for the town of Stillwater. In the fall of 1895 Mr. Bassett moved to Greenwich and became proprietor of the Greenwich House, which he has successfully conducted and had made it a first-class hotel in every respect.
In 1892 Mr. Bassett married Lou Osgood, daughter of Horace and Catherine (Hill) Osgood, of Stillwater, N.Y. They have two children, Ralph O., born November 9, 1893, and Anna L., born July 3, 1895.
