Patricia Winifred Pels - Patricia Winifred Pels, lovingly known as Patty, died at the age of 86 on Saturday, May 8, 2010, of natural causes. Daughter of Rear Admiral Melvin Hughes and Eleanore Sage Bassett, Patty was born on St. Patrick's Day, 1924, in Annapolis, Maryland. Patty married John Pels in San Francisco on April 27, 1947. She lived as a child in Honolulu and Manila and developed a love of travel as she visited family and traveled with friends through the years to Turkey, Guam, Belgium, Grand Caymans, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Egypt, Panama, Belize and Puerto Rico. Being a resident of Austin since 1978, Patty was an avid duplicate bridge player, a supporter of the local bridge studio, and attained Silver Life Master. She was a member of the DAR, supporter of Austin theaters, contributor to the Austin Playhouse, was actively involved in the Heritage Society and was interested in local politics. She enjoyed reading, playing cards and spending time with her family. Survived by her husband John Pels and children, Lieutenant Commander Bruce Pels, Sandra Pels Harris, Peter Pels, Lucinda Pels Anderson, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two brothers. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 11 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar. The family would particularly like to thank John Dieck, M.D. for the unrivaled quality of care for Patty and for the loving care she received at The Christopher House.
