Daniel Stafford Bassett, Jr. passed away September 23, 2007 after a lengthy illness. He was born June 28, 1920 in Eastland, Texas to Daniel Sr. and Sue Eunice Warren Bassett. The family moved from town to town for work in the 1920's and 1930's, and he graduated from high school in Bartlesville in 1939, where he also played trumpet and served as vocalist in the locally-remembered Jack Young Swing Band. After Pearl Harbor, Dan was drafted into the army and became Staff Sergeant, initially serving as marksmanship instructor at training camps in the United States. He was shipped out to Europe in 1944 and joined the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, arriving in France shortly after the D-Day Invasion. Later, he and the men of the 507th jumped into and fought the Battle of the Bulge, and continued on until the end of the war. While overseas, he was in Birmingham, England, where he met his future wife, Margo. When they returned to the United States after the war, Dan finished his last year of college and entered law school at the University of Oklahoma. Dan and Margo later moved to Bartlesville where he practiced law for over fifty years, including serving as City Attorney for the City of Dewey for more than twenty years. In 2002, after retiring, they moved to Oklahoma City to be nearer to their family. Dan enjoyed all kinds of do-it-yourself activities, and one of his favorite things was taking family trips in the RV. Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved brother, Randy; and his sister, Susan, who died as an infant during the Influenza Epidemic of 1918. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margo; his son, Steve Bassett of San Jose, California; his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Rex Baker of Oklahoma City; grandsons, Lucas and Ryan Baker of Oklahoma City; nieces, Sandra Soli of Oklahoma City, and Katha Bassett Knippa of Houston, Texas; as well as many other nieces and nephews. After cremation by OK Cremation & Mortuary Service, interment will be at a later date. We will always miss him. He was a great husband, father and friend.
