Jerry Philip Bass
VALPARAISO, Fla. -- Jerry Philip Bass, 58, of Valparaiso passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, after a long and valiant battle against lung cancer.
Jerry was born in Brunswick, Ga., on July 23, 1945. He moved from his family home of 21 years in Lowndes County, Ga., to the Valparaiso area in 1967, where he began his distinguished 34-year civil service career as a Senior Systems Engineer at Eglin AFB. He served as a weapons analyst, computer programmer, branch chief and technical director for the Analysis Division of the Directorate of Engineering. Jerry is best remembered by his co-workers for his humor, dedication to his work and being a friend and mentor. He made the application of complex mathematical and engineering techniques simple by relating them to every-day experiences. Although he retired from Eglin in 2001, he is still remembered and loved by his co-workers for who he was and what he gave to others.
Jerry was a devoted member of Bluewater Baptist Church where he served for many years as deacon, Sunday School teacher and resident comedian. He will be remembered by friends and neighbors for his ability to make people laugh and his candid remarks in any situation. He touched so many lives during his life and helped to create many wonderful memories.
Jerry is survived by Lorene, his loving wife of 36 years; sons, Scott Bass of New York City, Greg Bass of Atlanta; daughter, Lisa Ray and her husband, Charlie of New Orleans. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Louelle Bass of Hahira, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors who will miss him dearly.
The family will receive friends today, May 13, 2004, from 6-8 p.m. at Heritage Gardens Funeral Home in Niceville, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, May 14, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to either Bluewater Baptist Church, the Covenant Hospice in Niceville or the American Cancer Society. -- Heritage Gardens Funeral Home Niceville, FL
