- Death Closed Remarkable Life of Reverend L.D. Bassett

The Rev. Lorenzo Dow Bassett, Baptist minister, died Sunday, March 15th, 1942, at his home in Louin. Bro. Bassett was born May 22, 1861, and was approaching his 81st birthday. This man of God lived a full and useful life; humbly serving his God and doing good to his fellowman. It is said that he organized forty churches during his ministry of sixty years. He had at various times been pastor of sixty churches over this section of the state. He said of himself, that he had two professions, farming and the ministry; the pay he left to the Lord and his people and "never suffered for one day".
The Reverend Bassett was born in Newton county, son of the late W.H. and Mary Ann Phelps Bassett. The family moved to Smith county and Mr. Bassett grew to manhood near Pineville. He was converted at an early age. He married Miss Mary Gardner and at the age of 22 was ordained to preach.
He served on the old General Association Mission Board for fifteen years and then served on the State Mission Board for ten years. He worked as missionary pastor for each board. He baptized approximately 2,000 people, married some 400 couples and rode horseback 2,000 miles a year for nearly forty years. He was pastor of the following churches during his ministry:
Scott County - Liberty, Ephesus, Sebastopol and Hopewell.
Smith County - Sylvarena, Mt. Carmel, Sylvia Grove, Leaf River, Bethel, Mt. Pleasant, Old Mt. Nebo, Beaver Dam, Mt. Zion, Harmony, Liberty, Fellowship, Marathon Logging Camp, Summerland, Ted, and Clear Springs.
Jasper County - Louin, Mt. Vernon, Stringer, Mossville, Rose Hill, Foulk Mill, Eden, Dushua Camp, Vernon and Lake Como.
Jones County - Sharon, Moselle, Liberty, Tuchker's Crossing, County Line, Blodgett, Hebron and Union.
Covington County - Union.
Simpson County - Dry Creek, Goshen, Goodwater.
Perry County - Beaumont and Merrill.
Red River (Texas) County - First Baptist Church Avery, one year, full time.
To his first marriage were born seven children: Reverend L.G. Bassett, Louin; Mrs. Etta Roberts, Silver City; Orange Bassett, Newton; R.R. Bassett, Louin; L.D. Bassett, Raleiph; Mrs. Tura Holder, Hattiesburg; J.B. Bassett, Louin.
When the eldest brother died, he and his wife took four children of his brother and reared them. They were: Donie Boyd, Louin; J.C. Bassett, present sheriff of Jasper county; Arthur Bassett, deceased; Walter Bassett, Oak Grove, Louisiana.
In August, 1899, his wife died. Three years later he married Mrs. Betty Gardner, mother of five children by her first husband, who were Oliver Gardner, killed in the World War; Floyd Gardner, Ted; Ezra Gardner, Louin; Rosa and Frank Gardner, deceased.
To Mr. Bassett and wife was born one daughter, Shellie Maye Shows, of Hattiesburg.
Mrs Bassett died, and Mr. Bassett remarried. His third wife was formerly Mrs. Sally Martin. Two sons by her former marriage were Ollion Martin, Decatur; Coy Martin of near Birmingham, Alabama. To this union were born three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Greene, Bay Springs; Miss Ruby Bassett of Louin; and Mrs. Naomi Ford, Bay Springs. He reared 22 children - seven step-children, four orphan children, and eleven of his own family.
There were 33 ministers present at his funeral held Tuesday afternoon at Louin. Reverends J.E. Wills, D.W. Moulder, L.N. Carlisle and Dr. L.G. Gates were the officiating ministers.
Pall bearers were: S.A. Hickman, D.F. Blackwell, R.L. Thompson, J.A. Horn, Lee Wilkins, P.A. Cockrell.
