Miss Shields Is Bride of Arch Bass Jr.
In a formal ceremony Miss Betty LuFerne Shields became the bride of Arch Lewis Bass Jr., of Durham, at six o?clock last evening in the Hayes Barton Methodist Church here. Dr. Harry C. Smith, performed the ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Mrs. David Randleman Shields jr., of Raleigh, and the late Mr. Shields. Mr. Bass is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arch Lewis Bass of Durham.
A program of wedding music was rendered by Mrs. Alton P. Tripp.
Given in marriage by her uncle, Cecil Edward Bell, the bride wore a gown of handcut and applied rosepoint lace over tulle and candlelight satin. The full skirt extended into a cathedral train. Her two tiered full-length veil of French illusion was attached to a sequin and pearl embroidered cap. She carried a boquet of Fleur D?Amour, brides roses and white orchids.
Maid of honor, Miss Judith Rhyne Bell, cousin of the bride, wore a waltz length pale pink rice taffeta dress fashioned with short sleeves, and a full gathered skirt. She wore a circular evening veil of pink with sequin trim and carried a cascade bouquet of American Beauty roses tied with wide satin ribbon.
Bridesmaids were Miss Mary Anne Bass, sister of the bridegroom, and Miss Mary Everett Kennedy of Durham; Mrs. Stephen Kenney of Chapel Hill; Miss Lillyan Lee Hill and Miss Margaret Jean Stewart of Arlington, Va.. Their gowns, evening veils and boquets were like that of the maid of honor.
Mr. Bass of Durham was his son?s best man. Ushers were Joseph Clinton Rogers, Robert Tyree Jones, Wyatt Thomas Dixon Jr., Norwood Anderson Thomas Jr., and John Dawson Stone of Durham.
For her daughter?s wedding, Mrs. Shields wore a floor-length gown of shell pink chiffon embroidered with iridescent sequins, and a matching tulle hat. Her flowers were lavender hybrid orchids. Mrs. Bass wore a floor-length gown of seafoam green parchment taffeta with bead and squin trim. Her hat was of matching taffeta and her flowers were lavender hybrid orchids.
Following the ceremony the bride?s mother entertained at a reception at the Woman?s Club. White bridal flowers and greenery decorated the club.
Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Dodge introduced the receiving line which was composed of Mrs. Shields, Mr. and Mrs. Bass, Mrs. David R. Shields, grandmother of the bride, Mrs. Harris Hartwell Bass of Henderson, grandmother of the bridegroom, the bridal couple and attendants.
Receiving throughout the club were Mr. and Mrs. Willard C. Pierson, Mr. and Mrs. Joel F. Moody, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil E. Bell, Mr. and Mrs. William Daniel, Mrs. W. March McKeithan and Mrs. Grady H. Freeman.
Serving were Mrs. William O. Goad, MRs. Haslin Simon, Mrs. George Thomas, Miss Fannie Chesson and Mrs. Cabot Carlton.
Mrs. Bass traveled in a suit of red wool tweed with white cape collar and hat. Her accessories were black and her corsage of white orchids.
The bride is a graduate of Saint Mary?s College and attended Meredith College. She was presented to North Carolina Society at the 1949 Debutante Ball. She is now working with the N.C. Military District.
Mr. Bass is a student of the University of North Carolina and is a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma social fraternity.
Upon their return they will reside in Raleigh.
