      Larry Joseph Bass
Columbia - Memorial service for Larry Joseph Bass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 25, 2013, at First Baptist Church, Columbia, in Boyce Chapel, followed by a reception in Ellis Hall. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, is assisting the family. Larry, son of the late Joseph Benjamin and Dorothy Mae Bass, went into the open arms of his Lord and Savior on Friday morning, November 22, 2013. Born November 29, 1937, in Georgetown, he graduated from Winyah High School in 1955 and earned a bachelor's degree from Furman University in 1959. Larry received extra training as a Medical Technician at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. After graduating Larry entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany for 2 1/2 years. In 1963 Larry joined the staff of Baptist Hospital as Chief of the Laboratory. In 1966 he joined Baxter Healthcare and spent 30 years in medical sales. During his 30 years he received many awards, but the most meaningful was the King of the Mountain award for being "A Man's Man, A Friend to All, a Gentleman who proves the world is blessed most by men who do things, and not by those who merely talk about them." Larry was a very competitive athlete who loved to challenge friends on the tennis court and golf course. Larry was a member of First Baptist Church in Columbia where he gave of his time and talents in many ways. He served as a deacon, chairman of the Recreational Committee, on the Property Committee, and co-teacher of the Wisdom Seekers Sunday School class. One of his greatest joys was working with Upward Basketball. He loved seeing the boys and girls growing spiritually and in their game skills. Larry loved working with the volunteers from around the church and often said he thought his spiritual gifts were "washing dishes and fixing toilets." Larry was humbled in 2012 when he was chosen as the Senior Adult of the Year. Larry is survived by his wife, Margaret Tompkins Bass; one brother, Jim Bass (Dot); two sisters, Doris B. McLeod (Bob) and Faye B. Parrish (Sidney), both of Orlando, Florida. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who held a very special place in his heart. The family requests that any memorials be made to the Dayton Anderson volunteer fund at First Baptist Church, 1306 Hampton Street, Columbia, South Carolina 29201 or any place you feel will glorify God's Kingdom.
