Arch Lewis Bass Jr.
Arch Lewis Bass, Jr., 69, died Wednesday, February 20, 2002, in Durham Regional Hospital. He was born in Durham to the late Arch Lewis Bass, Sr. and Anne Hatchett Bass.
A life-long parishioner of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, he was currently serving on the vestry. Arch was educated at Durham High School and the University of North Carolina. A U.S. Army veteran, he ser-ved his country in S. Korea during the Korean Conflict.
Arch retired in 1996, from Central Carolina Bank after a 30 year career. At the time of his death he was serving as chairman of the Board of Lions Club Industries and on the Board of Senior Pharm Assist. He was past president of Tobaccoland Kiwanis Club, United Way of Durham, and Hope Valley Country Club. He was a founding member of the Arthritis Foundation golf tournament, and a faithful booster of its cause. Arch was also Finance Chairman of the Red Cross; served on the Board of the Durham Symphony; was a Board member of the Durham Nursery School Assn.; past chairman of the Industry Visitation Committee, Durham Chamber of Commerce; Board member of the Greater Durham Community Foundation; and on the Board of Visitors of North Carolina Central University. A faithful steward of his time and talents, Arch was devoted to his community. He lived out his vocation in the fullest sense, quietly enabling others to pursue their goals, and becoming a mentor to many.
Surviving are his wife, of 47 years, Betty Shields Bass; his son, Arch Lewis Bass, III and wife, Margaret Hemingway Bass, of Durham; his daughter, Shields Bass Reh and husband, William Gerard Reh, of Durham; grandchildren, Arch Lewis Bass, IV, Emily Logan Bass and Shields Brennan Reh; a sister, Mary Ann Bass Upchurch and husband, Dr. Rivers Upchurch, of Reidsville; a niece, Gina Upchurch, of Durham; and nephew, Dr. Gilbert Upchurch, of Ann Arbor, Mich.
A requiem Eucharist will be offered 11:00 a.m. Saturday in St. Philip's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Scott Benhase and the Rev. Cathy Caimano presiding.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. in the parish hall of St. Philip's Church.
