Fall is Fatal to Carpenter, 78
John Bessette, 30 Waterhouse Street, Fatally Injured in Fall from Ladder
John Bessette, of 30 Waterhouse Street, a carpenter, was found deat at the rear of his home later yesterday afternoon as the result of a fall from a ladder.
Clinton County Coroner Dr. George Gonyea said that Mr. Bessette apparently had been working at a second-story height on the ladder when he fell. The coroner said that the 78-year-old man’s skull was fractured by the fall, and that he was dead when Dr. John Watson arrived at the scene in response to a telephone call. He is presumed to have been dead when he first was observed by Mrs. otis Fountain, who occupies an upstairs apartment at the Waterhouse Street address.
Mrs. Fountain was returning to her home when she saw Mr. Bessette lying on the ground. She summoned members of the family, who called Dr. Watson.
Dr. Gonyea said that there would be an inquest, possibly a week from today, but indicated that little testimony would be available, since they accident was not witnessed.
Surviving Mr. Bessette are his wife, one son, George, of Watervliet; a sister, Mrs. Edith Zuck of this city; two grandsons and two great-grandsons. A second sister, Mrs. Josephine Gravel, died in this city Nov. 15.
The body was taken to the Brown Funeral Home to await completion of funeral arrangements.
