Jean McKeen Bassett
HAMPTON - Jean McKeen Bassett, 74, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, resulting from an extensive and courageous battle related to heart and lung complications. Jean was a graduate of St. Vincent High School in Newport News, Maryview School of Nursing and Christopher Newport College. She retired from Sentara Hampton General Hospital with 42 years service as a Nurse Manager. Jean was a very giving person who lived her family. She will always be remembered for her generosity and kindness to others. She was very active in the Hampton Women's Club, serving as President, 1999-2001. She also actively volunteered for numerous organizations including Phillips Athletic Association, Hampton Literacy Council, Maryview Hospital, and assisted students in preparing for their GED. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Gladys McKeen Downs and Martin H. McKeen, and sister, Margaret Smith. Jean leaves to cherich her memory her loving husband, Leo Bassett; two daughters, Carolyn Perkins and Lynn Butler and husband, Ron; two sons, Mark Bassett and wife, Patti, and Kenneth Bassett and wife, Teresa; give grandchildren, Jessica and Christina Perkins, Brian, Jason and Elizabeth Bassett; and niece, Dale Smith. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A service to celebrate Jean's life will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 9, at the funeral home chapel with Dr. Chester L. Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
