Skull Fractured By Fall
Contractor Drops Thirty Feet and Sustains Fatal Injuries
Thomas Bassett, a contractor, residing at 614 Shotwell Street, while working on a three-story building in course of construction at 1275 Market street, yesterday afternoon, stepped upon a loose plank projecting from a scaffolding and was precipitated headlong to the basement, a fall of more than thirty feet.
Bassett was unconscious when picked up by his fellow workman, and was removed to the Central Emergency Hospital for treatment. An examination by Drs. Hartley and Stone showed that he had sustained a fracture of the base of the skull, accompanied by a severe hemorrhage from both ears. He was also treated for an extensive lacerated wound of the head and numerous minor injuries as a result of striking against the floor joists in the course of the fall. His condition was critical, and no hope was held of his recovery.
