Paul E. Bassett Sr.
PAUL E. BASSETT SR., 76, of Circuit Drive, a retired Army colonel and a retired corporate vice president, died yesterday at South County Hospital.
He was the husband of Catherine V. (Haskins) Bassett. Born in Boston, he was a son of the late Thomas E. and Elizabeth A. (Ryan) Bassett. Mr. Bassett was vice president of municipal finance at the former Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank, which in 1998 was fully absorbed by its then-parent company, BankBoston, at the time of his retirement in 1991.
A public accountant and real-estate broker, he had also been a commercial arbitrator and a labor-relations arbitrator since 1973.
He was a member of the state Retirement Board since 1966, and had also served as the director of finance for the City of Pawtucket. The director of the Society of Governmental Accountants and Auditors since 1963, he had been the society's president in 1967.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was active in the Army Reserve beginning in 1948. Mr. Bassett was commanding officer of 1021 Civil Affairs from 1976 to 1979. He had served as director of Industrial College of the Armed Forces, 1032nd Army Reserve School, for two years. He was a board member since 1969 of the Reserve Officers Association.
Mr. Bassett was appointed to the American Arbitration Association's commercial panel in 1973 and its national labor panel in 1974.
Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Paul E. Bassett Jr. and Herb T. Bassett, both of Narragansett, and Arthur W. Bassett of Lincoln; a daughter, Liz Palmer of Charlestown; and six grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Herbert F. Bassett and Florence Doyle.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. from Lawrence E. Fagan Jr. Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Francis Church, High Street, Wakefield. Burial with military honors will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
