Danvers, MA - Eugene "Gene" F. Bassett, 73, of Danvers, Mass., passed away peacefully on Sept. 9, 2019, at home surrounded by his family after a hard-fought battle with squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. He was the husband and best friend of the late Rosemary L. Bassett whom he shared 49 years of marriage.
Gene was born Oct. 2, 1945, in Boston, Mass., to the late Merrill and Helen Bassett. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Lynn in 1963, the same high school his granddaughter Alison graduated from exactly 50 years later. He went on to earn degrees from Wentworth Institute and Northeastern University. Gene worked at Polaroid as a production manager for over 25 years until his retirement in 2007.
Gene and Rosemary moved to Inverness, Fla., after his retirement. He loved fishing in his boat and making numerous visits to Walt Disney World with his wife. The highlight of his life was his grandchildren. He was an avid fan of their sports, especially hockey. He moved back to Massachusetts in June 2018 and made his home with his daughter Stacey due to his health. He remained positive throughout his illness, always saying, "Life is good" or "It's another adventure." Gene loved the Bruins, Patriots, and Red Sox, especially when they were winning.
He is survived by his daughters, Stacey Butler and her husband Paul, of Danvers, Mass., and Kim Bassett of N.H.; and son Eugene Bassett and his wife Lisa, of Derry, N.H.; grandchildren, Alison and Christopher Butler, Corey Bassett and his fiancée Madison and their daughter Rosemary and EJ and Lindsey Bassett. In addition, he is survived by his brothers, Merrill and his wife Diane Bassett and Richard and his wife Lora Bassett. He was predeceased by his son Eric Bassett. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Sun. from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Mackey Funeral Home, 128 S. Main St., Route 114, Middleton, MA.
