Constance Colt Bassett
Constance Colt Bassett, 97, of Camden, South Carolina, formerly of Pottersville, died on Monday, February 27, 2012, at her home.
The daughter of the late Henry and Julia Whitaker Colt, she grew up in Geneseo, New York, riding and enjoying the freedom of country life.
As a child and young adult, she traveled with her family to Europe, living in Switzerland for several years. While there she took up mountaineering and, with guides, climbed many difficult peaks. Before the war, the family relocated to Camden, South Carolina, where she again was able to ride and hunt.
At the beginning of World War II, she was in New York City working for the Free French, which operated radio stations broadcasting to occupied France. Her family and friends asked her to move to Washington D.C., where her language skills were needed at a new agency, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which after the war became the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). In 1943, she traveled to Tallahassee, Florida, to marry William B.K. Bassett, who was in the Air Force awaiting deployment to the Pacific Theatre.
After the war, Mr. and Mrs. Bassett lived on a dairy farm in Pottersville, where they raised their four children. Mrs. Bassett was an officer in the family corporation. The couple retired in 1973 to Camden, South Carolina. Mr. Bassett died there in 1991.
Mrs. Bassett is survived and missed by her four children and five grandchildren.
Graveside services to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 8, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Newark. Arrangements are by the Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, in Camden, South Carolina. Online condolences may be sent to Mrs. Bassett's family by visiting www.kornegayfuneral.com.
