Richard Bassett, 79, Was Computer Services Specialist
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today in St. Paul's Church in Dedham for Richard Bassett of Westwood, a computer services specialist with banks and other businesses for three decades until his retirement in 1975. Mr. Bassett died of cancer Sunday at the New England Sinai Hospital, Stoughton. He was 79 and a former resident of Dedham. Mr. Bassett worked for the First National Bank of Boston, National Shawmut Bank and the Accounting Corp. of America, among other companies. A native of Pittsburgh, Mr. Bassett graduated from Harvard College in 1934. During World War II, he captained a minesweeper in the Atlantic and Pacific. He was decorated with a Bronze Star and discharged as a Navy commander. He was honored in 1990 by the Ostomy Association of Boston for having visited 500 other cancer patients in hospitals since 1975. He leaves his wife of 54 years, Janet (Knight); two daughters, Susan of Flagstaff, Arizona and Nancy Smith of West Newton; and three granddaughters.
