      Chloe Isabel Bassett

Rockville Center, L.I., September 13 - Mrs. Chloe Isabel Bassett died suddenly of heart disease yesterday morning at the home of her son, Professor J. Anthony Bassett, principal of the South Side High School. She was in her 70th year. The funeral was held this afternoon and the remains taken by train to Deer River, Lewis County, for interment.

Lowville Journal Republican, Thursday, 19 Sep 1901

Last Saturday the remains of Mrs. Chloe J. Bassett arrived here for interment in the family plot in Swinburn cemetery. The remains were accompanied by her son, Prof. J. Anthony Bassett, and his son, Earl J. Bassett, of Rockville Center, L.I., at whose home she died September 17th. Mrs. Bassett arose in the morning feeling as well as usual, attending to her morning’s work, ate a hearty breakfast, and without a moment’s warning dropped dead of heart failure. She was born near Deer River, July 16, 1831, her maiden name being Mrs. Chloe J. Morse. She was married to the late J.A. Bassett, September 23, 1848. one son was born to them. She had lived in this town a greater portion of her life, having resided near this village for 58 years. Her husband died April 7, 1892. Since that time she had resided with her son. Mrs. Bassett was a kind, generous and greatly respected lady in this community, where she had become well known. It was always her chief delight to visit her former friends and neighbor here as often as it was possible for her to do so. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett took great interest in providing for the education of their son, who has always remained dutiful to all their wants in life as a recompense of reward. Mrs. Bassett for many years had been a consistent member of the M.E. Church. She had no relatives on her side this side of the Mississippi river. There was quite a gathering at the cemetery and the services at the grave were conducted by Rev. H.A. Lawrence, of Copenhagen. There were several beautiful floral pieces. Among those from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. M. Bassett, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bassett and daughter Cora, of Felts Mills; Frank Bassett, of Carthage, and John Bassett, of Lyons Falls. Prof. Bassett desires to extend his heartfelt thanks to all about here who so kindly assisted in the burial of his beloved mother, and especially to Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Austin for services rendered.
