Gunner Is Listed As Missing After B-29 Raid On Tokyo
Overseas less than a month, Corp. Clark B. Bassett, Jr., 19, of 202 Niagara St., North Tonawanda, a waist gunner on a B-29 Superfortress, has been missing in action over Tokyo since May 5, the War Department in formed his parents today. The North Tonawanda corporal?s father, Attorney Clark B. Bassett of North Tonawanda, is chairman of the Erie County Council, Boy Scouts of America, and former chairman of the North Tonawanda War Council.
Corp. Bassett was reported missing on his fourth mission to Japan, according to letters received by his parents from the family of another crew member. He went overseas in April. A graduate of North Tonawanda High School in 1943, Corp. Bassett attended Hamilton College before he was called to active service Feb. 1, 1944. He enlisted in the Summer of 1943.
