- He worked on the the farm as a youth in Missouri and worked in the family store after the family moved to Girard, Kansas. He graduated from Girard High School and then attended Pittsburgh State College but did not finish his degree. He was artistic and studied commercial art for a while but ended up in technical occupations since he was good at math and science. He was an avid reader and often stayed up late at night reading books. He moved briefly to Detroit, Michigan after Irene died where Irene's father lived in hopes of finding work, but was unsuccessful and returned to Girard. He moved to Wichita and got a job in the aircraft industry at Garrison & Hatfield Tool Company. He worked as a tool and die maker. After the end of World War II, he and some friends formed a company called Advance Products Company to utilize their sheetmetal skills in the development of civilian products. They manufactured aluminum products such as lawn sprinklers, modular kitchen cabinets, awnings, and picket fences. The company eventually closed and Ralph went into sales of kitchen cabinets for someone else. He got into real estate sales and pursued that occupation in Wichita and in Hobbs, New Mexico until his death. He was active in AA the last few years of his life. He is buried in Prarie Haven Cemetery in Hobbs, New Mexico.
