Former Hoover Elementary secretary Bassett dies
WHITTIER - Helen Bassett, a secretary at Lou Henry Hoover Elementary School for more than 30 years, died Friday at her Whittier home. She was 87. She was born December 27, 1915, in Missouri and grew up there, where she began dating James D. Bassett when both were 16. He came to California in 1938 to find work and she followed in 1940 to become his bride. In 1942, they moved to Whittier, joined the First Christian Church of Whittier and raised their three children.
A devoted wife, mother and homemaker, Helen Bassett began working at Hoover School, just up the street from her home, and she and her children walked to the school every day. She retired in 1983. She is survived by her husband, James Bassett of Whittier; son and daughter-in-law Bob and Janell Bassett of Orange; daughter and son-in-law Sally and Bill Fletcher of Malibu; and daughter and son-in-law Mary Elizabeth and John Costas of Fort Worth, Texas. She also leaves grandchildren John, Sarah, Michael and Robert Costas; Jake, Sally and Kent Bassett, and Patrick Shearer.
Interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rose Hills Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church of Whittier, 6355 Greenleaf Avenue.
