Josephine Bassett, Owned Wellington Clothing Shop
From the mid-1950's until about 1970, Josephine L. Bassett owned and operated the Bassett Apparel Shoppe for women and children of Herrick Ave. in Wellington.
She endeared herself to others through her thoughtfulness and willingness to help. If First Methodist Church in Wellington held a dinner, Mrs. Bassett volunteered to cook and serve. She wrote letters to power companies to help Edison High School in Milan obtain stadium lights. More recently, Mrs. Bassett, a member of the Wellington Historical Society, tried to get the New London Historical Society firmly established.
She also regularly performed good deeds for individuals when she saw the need. She liked to provide transportation and entertainment for friends who were unable to drive.
Mrs. Bassett, 77, of Wellington, was killed Saturday in a head-on collision on Ohio 58 south of Wellington while taking her friend, Leoma Gill, 80, out for dinner.
The driver of the other car, Wendy Blair, 19, and Gill were seriously injured and taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Blair's passenger, Patricia Hill, 13, also died in the accident.
Mrs. Bassett was born in Norwalk. Before graduating from New London High School in 1935, she worked for an A&P grocery store in New London. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star in New London.
Mrs. Bassett was a dedicated worker for numerous organizations in Wellington, such as the Silen Circle of Kings Daughters, the Needle Craft Club and the former Wellington Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Gaylord; daughters, Barbara Beiling of Stow and Beverly Anderson of Huron; son, Richard of Wellington; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Norton funeral home, 370 S. Main St., Wellington.

Elyriad man Life Flighted after crash in Amherst Township
AMHERST TWP. - An Elyria man was Life Flighted yesterday morning and is in critical condition following a car crash in Amherst Township, according to the State Highway Patrol.
According to Trooper Lance Deschuk, Dustin Bassett, 20, of Elyria, was westbound on state Route 113 east of state Route 58. According to Deschuk, Bassett tried to pass an SUV, but the SUV attempted to pass a bicyclist at the same time, resulting in a crash.
Deschuk said the accident occurred between Bechtel and Oberlin roads. The accident left state Route 113 closed down for more than three hours - from about 9:15 a.m. till about 12:30 p.m., according to the patrol.
According to Deschuk, the SUV Bassett attempted to pass was a 2007 Honda Pilot SUV driven by Jerry Lee, 58, of Oberlin. Lee and his wife were both in the car, according to Deschuk, but neither were hurt.
Debris from their collision struck an SUV driven by Christine T. Monroe, 63, of Oberlin, the post said. She was driving a 2007 Toyota Hylander, according to Deschuk.
The bicyclist was Frank Garam, 37, of Elyria, Deschuk said.
According to Deschuk, the accident is under investigation, and it is unclear whether speed, alcohol or drugs played a factor.
Deschuk said troopers have "no indication" the crash was alcohol or drug-related.

Crash leaves car severed, 20-year-old hospitalized
AMHERST TOWNSHIP - A 20-year-old Elyria man remains in critical condition after striking a tree and getting partially ejected from his car Sunday morning, according to Trooper Lance Deshuk of the Highway Patrol in Elyria.
Dustin Bassett was driving his 1997 Ford Escort east on SR 113 behind a 2003 Honda Pilot and a 2007 Toyota Highlander when they approached a bicyclist around 9:15 a.m.
As the driver of the Honda Pilot moved to the center to pass the bicyclist, Bassett attempted to pass both SUVs and struck the left side of the Honda, Deshuk said.
Bassett's car went off the right side of the road and crashed through a mile marker sign, sheared a utility pole and struck a tree. Deshuk said the tree severed the engine compartment from the passenger compartment and Bassett was partially ejected. The front half of the car kept moving forward until coming to rest in the front yard of 44285 Telegraph Road.
"I've got photos of the car and the car is unrecognizable," Deshuk said.
Bassett was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
Neither of the other drivers nor the bicyclist was harmed, Deshuk said.
Deshuk said it did not appear Bassett was wearing a seat belt and it is unknown how fast he was traveling.
No one has been charged and the accident remains under investigation.
