Michael Alan Bassett, 44, and his wife, Wendy Gayle Bassett, 40, and their son, Austin Edward Bassett, 5, all of McCleary, were murdered Friday, Aug. 11, 1995, in their home.
Mr. Bassett was born Feb. 13, 1951, in Elma, to Leighton Austin and Ann Lena (Coughran) Bassett. He graduated from Elma High School in 1969. He was a lifelong resident of Grays Harbor County.
Mr. Bassett served in the Navy for three years during the Vietnam War.
He worked for Simpson Timber Co.
Mr. Bassett belonged to the PTA. He was active in co-ed baseball with his wife. He enjoyed baseball, softball and basketball. He was an umpire and referee in all of those sports. He also coached all sports. He was involved in family sports and community activities.
Mrs. Bassett was born Wendy Gayle Lamb Aug. 12, 1954, in Elma to Lroen M. and Barbara jean (Beckwith) Lamb. She graduated from Elma High School in 1972. She was a lifelong resident of Grays Harbor County.
She was a homemaker and provided child-care services in her home. She also had worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Donald Arima.
Mrs. Bassett belonged to the PTA. She was active in co-ed baseball with her husband. She liked making crafts, caring for children, homemaking, baseball and sports. She took interest in the schools and community. She also enjoyed painting, holiday crafts and camping with her family.
The Bassetts were married July 19, 1975, in McCleary Methodist Church.
Austin Edward Bassett was born Nov. 30, 1989, in Olympia to Michael Alan and Wendy Gayle (Lamb) Bassett. He went to pre-school at McCleary Elementary School.
Austin Edward loved books, gardening, animals and visiting both grandmothers. He enjoyed playing on the farm, going to his sister?s softball events, swimming, taking walks in the field and picking berries with his family.
Survivors include the Bassetts? son, Brian Michael Basestt, McCleary; three daughters, Rachel Leigh Hook, Montesano, Heather Lynn Crossan, Elma, and Stephanie Erin Bassett, McCleary; Mr. Bassett?s mother, Ann Lena (Coughran) Bassett-Einert, McCleary; stepfather, Ewell C. Einer, McCleary; two brothers, Donald Lee, San Clemente, Calif.; Kenneth Roy, Olympia; a sister, Karen Sue Olson, Elma; Mrs. Bassett?s parents Loren M. and Barbara Jean (Beckwith) Lamb, McCleary; three brothers, Scott Alan Lamb, Oakville, Michael Steven Lamb, Westport, and Patrick Dale Lamb, Elma; two sisters, Debra Loreen Olson, McCleary, and Darla Jean Brown, Harriman, Tenn. Mr. Bassett was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Wayne.
A graveside service for the Bassetts will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, in McCleary Cemetery. The Rev. William Self will officiate.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Bassett Girls Memorial Fund, Key Bank, Elma and Olympia.
Arrangements are by Whiteside Funeral Chapel, Elma.
