Samuel Quincy Bass
SANFORD -- Samuel Quincy Bass passed away Saturday (6/22/19).
He was born in Newnan, Georgia on Oct. 2, 1926 to now deceased parents, Holman Clyde Bass and Lois Elizabeth Richmond Bass. His siblings were Margery Valez (deceased) and Grace Frier, who lives in Alaska. He attended high school in Camden, Alabama, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1944, serving in World War II for two years. He graduated from Auburn University, School of Forestry, in 1950. He then moved to Sanford and in 1952 married Mary Carolyn Reeves. Moving to Texas, they spent several years in that area, where three children were born -- Sam Jr. (Sharon), Clyde (Pam) deceased, and Emily Baumgartner (Fritz).
Moving back to Sanford, Sam, with the assistance of brother-in-law Charley Reeves, established Prudential Credit, where he remained for about 10 years. During those years, Sam was active in collecting funds for the establishment of O.T. Sloan Park. His greatest accomplishment was working with Frank Nunnaly in restoring and developing the Old Temple Theatre into a professional performing entertainment center in Sanford. Sam's second marriage was to Marsha Grant Penny in 1984. Marsha joined Sam in his next venture, ownership of Fine Arts Design, where he remained until retirement in 2001. Sam married Ann O'Connell Bass in 2006, whose adult daughters are Jo Ann Allen (Don) and Sandra Brown (Benny) of Seven Lakes, and Patricia Martins de sa (Robert) of Campinas, Brazil.
