      Republican, of Jackson, representative from Jackson County, 1st District; born May 26, 1911, the son of Edgar and Estelle Bassett, at Jackson; graduated from Jackson High School, Jackson Junior College, University of Michigan in 1933 with teacher's certificate and A.B. degree and from the Law School in 1937; served as principal of the Thomas A. Edison School, Madison No. 10, Royal Oak, as associate muncipal judge, assistant prosecuting attorney and friend of the court in Jackson; practiced law in Jackson with the exception of four years in the United States Army in World War II; married to Vera Agnes Scheffel of Jackson; children: W. George, Leland K. and Nancy Jane; member of the FIrst Baptist Church, Masons, Elks, American Legion, Jackson County Veterans' Council, Michigan Consolidated Veterans' Council, Delta Theta Phi, American Bar Association and Jackson County Sportsman's Club; elected to the House of Representatives in 1950 and to each succeeding session of the Legislature.

      Former state representative
      Wilfred George Bassett, a former state representative from Jackson, died Wednesday in Veterans Administrative Hospital, Tampa, Fla., while on vacation. He was 74.
      He was elected to the Legislature in 1950 and held that seat for 14 years, During that time he was speaker pro tem and chairman of the capital outlay commission. In 1965, Gov. George Romney appointed him a judge on the Worker Compensation Appeal Board. Four years later, Mr. Bassett resigned to become assistant clerk of the House of Representatives and also to serve as parliamentarian.
      Mr. Bassett was a schoolteacher and principal of Thomas Edison Elementary School before receiving his law degree from the University of Michigan.
      Surviving are his wife, Vera Agnes; two sons, Leland and W. George; a daughter, Nancy J. Bassett, and five grandchldren.
      Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the First Baptist Church, 201 South Jackson St., Jackson.
