Services Monday for Martha Bassett
Funeral services for Journal-News reporter Martha G. Bassett will be held Monday at 11:30 a.m. at the Hugh E. White Funeral home, 43 South Broadway, Nyack.
Ms. Bassett, who had worked at The Journal-News for the last six years, died in a car accident Friday on Route 9W in Upper Grand View.
She joined the Journal-News staff as a proofreader after graduating from Syracuse University, and soon moved on to jobs as an editorial clerk and copy editor.
In 1972, she was transferred to the newspaper?s Family-Sunday department and continued to work there until her death.
In addition to her work as a reporter, Ms. Bassett helped created the Senior Citizens section in the Sunday magazine, as well as editing the women?s club column and weddings and engagements.
She also edited the community news pages.
Born Jan. 24, 1947 in Bennington, Vt., Ms. Bassett was educated at the Emma Willard School in Troy, N.Y., before attending college in Syracuse.
At the time of her death, she lived at 12 First Ave., Nyack with her 7-year-old daughter, Zoya Geacintov, who survives.
Also surviving are her father, Preston Bassett of Wyckoff, N.J., her mother, Harriett Doey of Middlebury, Vt., a sister, Mrs. Ellen Meadors of Malden, Mass., a brother Paul Bassett of Jordanville, N.Y.; her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Preston R. Bassett of Ridgefield, Conn.; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Charles Greene of Middlebury, Vt.; and her fiancé, Chuck Myers, a reporter for The Journal-News.
Friends may call at the Hugh E. White Funeral Home from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
After funeral services Monday, the body will be cremated at the Ferncliff Crematory in Hartsdale, with burial to follow at the family?s convenience in Ashfield, Mass.
Donations may be made to the American Back Society, of which Ms. Bassett was a member. They should be sent in care of Emma Marie Snedeker, Boxburger Road, Valley Cottage.
