SHELBURNE FALLS, Mass. -- Ralph William "Bill" Bassett, 60, of 207 Main St.,
died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at home.
He was born in Greenfield, March 13, 1944, the son of Ralph W. and Mary
(Stacy) Bassett.
He was a 1962 graduate of the former Arms Academy in Shelburne Fall
During the 1960s, Bassett served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard. He
served with Company B of the 2-104th Infantry, based in Greenfield.
At the time of his death, he was employed by a construction company as a heavy
equipment operator.
He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 98.
He had worked for the union for 40 years.
His love of antique oak furniture led him to own and operate Yankee Pastime
Antiques in Shelburne Falls. He enjoyed traveling around to various oak shops
talking antiques with those friends of business. He also enjoyed his Sunday
morning breakfasts at local restaurants visiting with friends.
He was a lifelong sportsman with a special interest in fishing and had a love
for family gatherings. He was an attentive son and brother to all, including a
special friend, Susan.
Survivors include his mother of Shelburne Falls; a brother, Robert W. Bassett
and his wife, Connie, of Buckland; a sister, Pamela Twitchell and her husband,
David, of Whitingham, Vt.; three nieces, Kim Tawney and her husband, Bryan, of
Simsbury, Conn., Abby Bassett of Greenfield, Jessica Twitchell of Whitingham;
and three nephews, Robert Wade Bassett and his wife, Carmen, of Ashfield, Toby
Bassett of Belchertown, and David Twitchell of Whitingham.
His father predeceased him in 1992.
Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the SMITH-KELLEHER FUNERAL HOME
in Shelburne Falls with the Rev. David Neil, pastor of Trinity Church,
officiating. Burial will be in Arms Cemetery in Shelburne Falls.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 3 to 6 at the funeral home.
