Richard W. Bass
DONIPHAN -- Richard W. "Dick" Bass, 87, of Doniphan died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Doniphan. The Rev. Jocelyn Tupper will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park at Grand Island. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Mr. Bass was born Jan. 4, 1922, in Anselmo to Charles Monroe Bass and Ina Pearl (Fenner) Bass. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia. Survivors of the immediate family include three sons and daughters-in-law, Rod Bass and Christine Collins of Cottonwood, Ariz., David and Laura Bass of Ankeny, Iowa, and Richard W. Bass Jr. and wife, Jacqueline, of Broken Arrow, Okla.; and Lynda Bass of Lawrence, Kan. Other survivors include grandchildren, Andy Bass, Tiffany Fike and husband Ryan, Sarah Bass and Richard W. Bass III; and great-granddaughter, Lily Fike. He grew up and attended rural schools in the area, graduating from Anselmo High School in 1939. He moved to Grand Island in 1939 to attend the Grand Island Business College. He enlisted in the Nebraska National Guard and served on active duty from Dec. 23, 1940, until his discharge from the Army Ground Forces, Army War College, Fletcher General Hospital, Cambridge, Ohio, on Oct. 3, 1945. While in the service, he married Julia M. Stewart Jan. 22, 1945, in Little Rock, Ark. Upon discharge from active duty, they returned to Grand Island where they made their home until moving to Amick Acres, Doniphan, in 1970. He spent 44 years in the building industry until he retired in September 1989. He served in various capacities on numerous boards for the United Methodist Church, civic, social, trade associations, Chamber of Commerce, etc. He was an honorary board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters in Grand Island and Central Nebraska Home Builders Association. He was very active in volunteer work, especially activities connected with his church and the Methodist churches in the district. He was also preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church of Doniphan, Big Brothers Big Sisters Grand Island Scholarship fund or Habitat for Humanity in Grand Island.
