      James A. Bass, Boys? School Head Dies

      James A. Bass, superintendent of the Arkansas Negro Boys Industrial School for 10 years, died suddenly of a heart attack early today at the school at Wrightsville. He observed his 62nd birthday yesterday.
      Mr. Bass had been an Arkansas public official since 1926. A resident of Blytheville all of his life until he moved to Little Rock, he served as Mississippi county sheriff, county clerk and tax assessor during continuous periods from 1926 until 1934.
      He came here when Governor Baily appointed him to the Arkansas Bond Refunding Board during the study of the $137,000,000 state highway bond refunding program, completed in 1939. He also is a former banker.
      Governor Bailey also appointed him superintendent of the industrial school, where he served under three governors.
      Before going into public life, Mr. Bass was employed by the Farmers Bank Trust Co., Blytheville, and had been a Mississippi county farmer.
      He retained his membership in the 1st Methodist Church at Blytheville after coming to Little Rock.
      Mr. Bass is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alma Arnold Bass; one son, Vinton A. Bass, Memphis; a daughter, Mrs. Jerry Holly, Cooter, MO.; four brothers, Tom, Ed, Milton and Herman, Blytheville; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Jones, Cooter, and Mrs. Josie Wade, Houston, Tex.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. tomorrow in Drummond?s Chapel by the Rev. Kenneth L. Spore. The body will be taken to Blytheville for burial. Active pallbearers will be: J.M. McCain, R.B. Hobby, R.C. Grissom, J.P. Cone, J.E. Crisp, J.W. Sanders and Hershal Garner; honorary pallbearers are Governor Laney, Roy Smith, John Trumpler, Ope Hartje, W.E. Robey, H.B. hargis, R.D. Moore, Dave Glover, Porter Grace, Charles Clerget, Vance Clayton, J.C. gbaker, Jack R. Porter, Judge Lewis Mashburn and Everett Henry.
      Another service will be conducted in the Cobb Funeral Home in Blytheville at 3 p.m.
