Aged Retired Farmer Dies At HIs Home on Race Street
Mr. John W. Bassett, aged 76 years, a well-known citizen of this city, died at his home, corner Race Street and Cemetery avenue last Sunday morning about 6 o'clock. His death was caused by a stroke of paralysis, which he suffered only a few hours previous to his death. Although the deceased had not enjoyed the best of health for several years past, he was apparently well and able to be out and attend to business. The morning before he died he was down to the Court House. Mr. Bassett spent the greater part of his life in farming, and was very successful. He retired from this vocation about ten years ago and has since lived in the city. At the time of his death he was a larger owner of excellent real estate in this county. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett had been married over fifty-two years. Two years ago they celebrated their Golden Wedding. He is suvived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Bassett, and children - Wlliam A. Bassett of Dunn, Louisiana; John W. Bassett, of Salem; Leonard E. Bassett of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; Roland H. Bassett of this city; Mrs. Hampton H. LeCompte, and Mrs. Martin Wright, of this city; Mrs. George H. Twilley, of Salem; and Mrs. Herbert Goslin, of Linkwood. The funeral services were held from his late home Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with interment in the Cambridge Cemetery. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Charles N. Stichbury, Edgar Shackleford, John B. Meredith, Wm. B. Yates, John Skinner and Rufus Fooks.

Have Been Married More Than
A Half A Century
Mr. and Mrs. John W. Bassett, well-known residents of this city, yesterday celebrated at their home on Race street, the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage. The couple were married January 21st, 1862 at the home of the then bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Harding, near Church Creek. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett went to live in Bucktown district, on a farm near the present Little Blackwater Bridge, and lived there only a short time, when they removed to the Mitchell farm, at Bucktown, near Bucktown camp ground; they resided there 28 years, during which time they raised eight children. They were prosperous and accumulated considerable property.

In addition to the eight children and their families, Mr. and Mrs. Bassett have thirty grandchildren living, one of whom is married being the wife of Mr. Thos. Bradley of Secretary.
Despite their advanced years, both Mr. and Mrs. Bassett enjoy fairly good health. Mr. Bassett was 75 last November, and were it not for his white beard, might be taken for a man much younger. Mrs. Bassett is 70, but does not look more than 60. They have lived in Cambridge eleven years, having removed here from the farm at Sale, after living upon it eight years. Celebrates 72nd Anniversary
Mr. John W. Bassett on Saturday last celebrated the seventy-second anniversary of his birth by entertaining at dinner his eight children and a number of his grandchildren. Mr. Bassett's children are Mesdames George H. Twilley, of Salem;
Herbert Goslin, of LInkwood; Hampton LeCompete and W.R. Storr, of this city; Messrs. W.A., Leonard E. and R.H. Bassett, of Cambridge; Mr. John W. Bassett, Jr. of Salem. All were present to grace the happy occasion.
Mr. and Mrs. Bassett were married about fifty-six years ago. They lived for many years in Bucktown district, where Mr. Bassett engaged in farming, in which he was quite successful. They have made their home in this city for the past eight years.
Mrs. Bassett was before her marriage Miss Elizabeth Ellen Harding, of Madison. Mr. Bassett was a native of Lakes district.
