Accidents and Fatalities
(By Telegraph - Press Association)
Auckland, 15th August
What appears to be a case of suicide occurred this morning in a boarding house in Hobson-street. A remittance man, John Cockburn Owen Bassett, about forty years of age, was discovered dead in bed. On a table beside him was a glass, the contents of which are supposed to have been a mixture containing cyanide of potassium. A bottle containing a quantity of the same mixture was in the room, while on the floor was a wrapper with the name of the poison upon it. Bassett was last seen alive between 2 and 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, when he was seen going into his bedroom.
