An Appreciation
In the passing of Mr. G. E. Bassett Frant has again lost a notable and much respected inhabitant.
The eldest son of the late Mr. H. Bassett, he was the head of the old and long-established Bassett family, members of which have for many generations rendered loyal service to the beautiful Sussex village they so much love.
Mr. Bassett, in a quiet, unobtrusive, yet most efficient manner, did much work in this ?sweet smiling? village to help in the preservation of its amenitie3s, and in the furtherance for its welfare. Many families have happy memories of his kindly and practical help and advice in troublous times.
In his life he typified what is best in the character of the English yeoman ? simplicity, straightforwardness, independence, and a deep love of Nature and the elements of life.
His death occurring so soon after that of his brother, the late Mr. W.H. Bassett, the family, and indeed the whole of Frant, have sustained a real and lasting loss. ?The past is all his fame.?
