Dr. Paul Vanreed Miller, 65, Ex-education Dean At Lehigh
Dr. Paul VanReed "Van" Miller, 65. of 2644 Main St., Bethlehem, dean emeritus of Lehigh University's College of Education, died Monday in his home. He was the husband of Eloise (Williams) Bassett Miller and the late Elizabeth K. (Krecker) Miller. He and his second wife were married seven years last November.
Miller served as dean of Lehigh's College of Education from 1982 until his retirement in 1988.
After receiving a doctor of education degree from University of Pennsylvania in 1965, he joined the Lehigh faculty as an assistant professor of education in 1966. He later served as director of the division of measurement and research, 1968-77, and chairman of the human development department, 1977-81.
Miller specialized in education research, psychometric theory and statistical analysis. He published several articles on these topics as well as reports on correctional education programs for prison inmates.
"Van Miller was a very special guy, with unusual candor and a wry sense of humor that in combination endeared him to me and many others at Lehigh as a friend and colleague," Lehigh President Peter Likins said. "I miss him right now, and I will miss him for years to come."
Miller received a bachelor's degree with honors in psychology from Yale University in 1946 and a master's in psychology from Penn in 1948.
Born in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Paul VanReed and Grace D. (Ferguson) Miller.
He was a member and former elder at Central Moravian Church, Bethlehem.
A Navy veteran of World War II, Miller worked on the V-12 rocket project at Yale University.
He was a former chairman of the board of trustees at Moravian Academy, Bethlehem, and a director of Historic Bethlehem Inc.
Survivors: Wife; daughter, the Rev. Elizabeth D. of Lake Mills, Wis.; son, Geoffrey C. of Lafayette, Calif.; sister Polly, wife of J. Colin Campbell of Bedminister, N.J.; stepsons, William V. Bassett Jr. of New York City, and Stephen J. Bassett and Michael R. Bassett, both of East Falmouth, Mass., and three grandchildren.
Memorial services: 11 a.m. Thursday in the church. No calling hours.
