Eloise Bassett Miller
Eloise Bassett Miller, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, April 15, 2010, in the comfort of her home in Kirkland Village. Born: in Clarksburg, PA, she was a daughter of the late Harvey and Lester Williams. Personal: She was the wife of the late William V. Bassett, an engineer with Bethlehem Steel Corp., and the late Paul VanReed Miller, former Dean of the College of Education at Lehigh University. Eloise earned her BA from Penn State University and her MA in history and political science from Montana State University. She continued with further graduate work in American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and in 18th century English literature and art at the University of London. She was an assistant professor in the Moravian College English department, where she was the first female professor, and referred to herself as "the token female". She was also an assistant professor at Cedar Crest College, and a lecturer for the Lay Academy in Theology Literature and Coffee courses of the Ecumenical Program for Continuing Education at Moravian Theological Seminary. Eloise was an avid tennis player and bridge player, loved to garden, and enjoyed family ski trips and summers on Cape Cod. Eloise was acknowledged as the foremost historican on James Burnside, and was the author of "James Burnside, Moravian Missionary and Pennsylvanian Assemblyman". She received the Golden Laurel Award as Woman of the Year by the Bethlehem YWCA in 2003. Memberships: She was a member and elder at Central Moravian Church, and she also served on the Moravian Academy Board of Directors. Eloise was president of the Junior League of the Lehigh Valley, president of the Burnside Plantation Board, a board member of the United Way, a board member of the South East Neighborhood Center, a docent at the Allentown Art Museum, and a volunteer in the Reach to Recovery program for cancer patients. Survivors: Three sons, William V. (Rick) Bassett, Jr. and his wife Alyson Grunder of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Stephen J. Bassett and his wife Janet McGarry of San Francisco, Michael R. Bassett and his wife Sarah McCormick of Needham, MA; a stepdaughter Elizabeth D. Miller of Lake Mills, WI; a stepson Geoffrey C. Miller and his wife Linda of Lafayette, CA; four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. Eloise was predeceased by a sister, Rose Mary Marriner. Services: A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at the Old Chapel of Central Moravian Church, Heckewelder Place, Bethlehem. Arrangements have been entrusted to Long Funeral Home, Bethlehem.
