ANDERSON — Robert D. "Bob" Bassett, 62, passed away peacefully July 24, 2009,
at his residence, with his loving family at his side. He went home to be with
his Heavenly Father following a courageous two-year battle with brain cancer.
He was born Oct. 25, 1946, in Anderson, the son of Robert "Earl" and Ma
(Cochran) Bassett. He resided in the Alexandria area most of his lifetime,
moving to Anderson in 1993.
Bob was a graduate of Alexandria-Monroe High School, Class of 1965. He had
worked in the engineering departments of the Omni North Hotel in Indianapolis
and went on medical disability in August 2007 from the Conrad Hilton Hotel,
also in Indianapolis. Bob had also previously worked at Johns-Manville,
General Cage and Best Lock.
He was a longtime member of Alexandria First Baptist Church and was ministered
to by several loyal friends during his illness. Bob had many hobbies and was
skilled at all he undertook. He made recumbent bicycles, liked woodworking and
was an accomplished artist with oil paints. Bob had also received two patents
on his inventions. He loved to vacation with his wife and enjoyed fishing. His
last wish was to return to Florida and catch more sharks at Daytona Beach. Our
lives are richer and fuller for having known Bob Bassett.
Survivors include his loving wife, Karen (Thomas) Bassett, whom he married
Aug. 19, 1967; two sons, Shane (wife, Lisa) Bassett of Jeffersonville a
Travis (wife, Mindy) Bassett of McDonough, Ga.; four grandchildren, Brenden
Bassett and Alexis Bassett, both of Jeffersonville, and Trevor Bassett and
Brianna Bassett, both of McDonough, Ga.; his mother, Mary Bassett of
Alexandria; sister, Kathy (husband, Frank) Davis of Alexandria; in-laws,
Gerald and Doris Thomas of Alexandria; brothers-in-law, Gary (wife, Terri)
Thomas and Bryan Thomas, all of Alexandria; and several aunts, uncles, nieces,
nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank Drs. Goshert, Eddy, Mares, Molina and Bright
and their staff members, with special thanks to Jennifer, Bob's hospice nurse,
and aides Vicki, Helen, Chasey and Charlotte.
Bob was preceded in death by his father, Robert "Earl" Bassett, who died in
1996; an infant sister, Judith Bassett; paternal grandparents, Roscoe a
Grace Bassett; and maternal grandparents, Virgil and Dorothy Cochra
A Celebration of Homegoing Service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the First
Baptist Church, 2107 South Park Ave. (Indiana 9), Alexandria, officiated by
Bob's longtime friend, Pastor Cliff Richardson. Interment will take place at
Park View Cemetery, Alexandria.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N.
Harrison St., Alexandria. The family will also receive friends from noon until
1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alexandria First Baptist Church or to
the American Cancer Society.
