HUBBARD – There will be services at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2012, at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home for Robert Bassett Thomson, 96, who passed away Sunday, March 4, 2012, at home, with his family by his side.
Robert was born Dec. 5, 1915, in Butler, Pa., a son of Elias D. and Shirley Bassett Thomson, and came to Youngstown in 1940, and to Hubbard in 1953.
He was an engineer at Truscon from 1937 to 1949, and worked in sales at Republic Industries Prefab Building for 20 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hubbard, and was a 50 year member of Western Star No. 23 Blue Lodge. Robert was a wood carver and enjoyed going out for fish dinners on Friday night.
His wife, the former, Shirley M. Kerr, whom he married Aug. 31, 1939, passed away March 10, 1999.
He is survived by his children, Robert B. (Judi) Thomson of Hubbard, Mark W. (Kathy) Thomson of West Middlesex, Pa., and Gail A. (Nicholas) Habel of Baldwinsville, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, Dawn Shaffer, Mark W. Thomson, Robert Thomson, Shannon Stevens, Stacy Fabrizio, Kari Padilla, Mark Habel, and Jeff Habel; and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and an infant son, Eugene Thomas.
Special thanks to Dr. Awaida and her staff, Dr. Bottar and his staff, and MVI Hospice for all the care given to Robert.
There will be calling hours on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Thursday, March 8, 2012, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home.
Burial will be at Castleview Cemetery in New Castle, Pa.
