Myra Giles Hammond
Myra Giles Hammond, 51, passed away on the 31st of March 2007, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was born on the 5th of January 1956 in El Paso, Texas. She is preceded in death by parents Charles and Elizabeth Hammond of El Paso and her grandparents Charles and Myra Bassett. As a young girl, Myra spent her youth at the family ranch, Kamalchie, in New Mexico and summers in Santa Monica, CA. Her teenage years were spent at Deverreux School in Santa Barbara, California. At Deverreux, Myra participated in many Special Olympics competitions and received an award for being Most Helpful to Others. Myra spent the last 15 years as a citizen at the Brookwood Community in Brookshire, Texas where she flourished. As an active citizen and member of the Kilroy House, Myra enjoyed ceramics and silkscreening, as well as working in the greenhouse, recently opened restaurant and gift center. What brought her the most joy, however, was spending time with her many loving friends and family. Myra's love for life was inspired by the simple interactions with people around her. An angel among us, Myra never complained through the challenges life presented to her. She was a gift to all she touched. Myra loved her family deeply, her dog Wimberly, and her many close friends. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her siblings, Charles Bassett Hammond, Elizabeth Craig, Katherine Ulmer, and Victoria Hammond , cousins Giles Weisenberger, Flory Ellis, Barbara Tomicki, nieces and nephews, Avery Rowles, Laura and Charlie Hammond, Jr., Katherine, Stirling and Charlie Craig, Frank and Lauren Ulmer, Harry and Avery Marvin, and Zack Pelletier. A service of remembrance will be conducted at one o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 4th of April, in the chapel of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston, with The Rev. Dr. Douglas W. Richnow as officiant.
