      George E. H. Rydberg, age 90, of Dracut, formerly of Wilmington, died peacefully at his home in Dracut on Sunday, January 31, 2010, in the care of his family and hospice.

      Born in Leominster, MA on March 17, 1919, George was the dear son of the late George F. and Minnie (Barkhouse) Rydberg. George grew up in Charlestown and was educated there.

      George married Bessie Bassett on September 12, 1944 and they celebrated over 57 years of marriage before her passing in 2002. George and Bessie moved to Wilmington in 1961 and in 2003 George moved to Dracut to be closer to his family.

      George was a member of the Wilmington and Dracut Senior Centers and an active member of the Wilmington United Methodist Church.

      He worked at Revere Sugar in Charlestown for many years prior to retiring. Following his retirement, George worked at NAPA Auto Parts in Wilmington, where he enjoyed his fellow staff members and customers.

      George had a very active lifestyle, he was involved in Civil Defense, he worked delivering ice and coal, running a pet store, an egg farm, and was very talented at constructing and selling wooden lawn furniture. He loved to “putter” around the house and work on his many projects. George enjoyed ham radios, woodworking, animals, birds, and camping at Old Stage Campground.

      George was a devoted family man and loved his family unconditionally. He and his wife Bessie were “Mom & Dad” to 27 foster children throughout the years and received an award from the State of Massachusetts for the devotion, love, and care they unselfishly gave.

      George was the beloved husband of the late Bessie (Bassett) Rydberg, loving father of Susan Danskin & her husband Mark of Dracut, Christine Waite & her husband David of Des Moines, Iowa, and Patricia Ordway of Methuen, devoted grandfather of Mark Danskin of Salem, Matthew Danskin of Dracut, Alexander Waite of Iowa, Courtney & Justin Ordway of Methuen, and dear brother of the late Connie Nelson.

      Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 5th at 11:00 a.m. in the Wilmington United Methodist Church, 87 Church St., Wilmington, Interment Wildwood Cemetery. Visiting hours Thursday, February 4th from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington.

      Memorial donations in George’s name may be made to the Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Building 9, Lawrence, MA 01843.
