      George Bassett Badly Shocked
Knocked Out by Live Wire on
Belt Line Car, but is Now in a State of Recovery

Mr. George Bassett, a young man employed at Swift Manufacturing Company, came near losing his life last night by coming in contact with the connection wire from a trolley car to the trailer, which furnishes the lights for the trailer car. Bassett got a shock of about 110 volts, and at one time it was thought that he was a doomed man, but prompt measures were taken to restore respiration, and at a late hour last night he was progressing nicely.
The unfortunate accident in which Bassett came near losing his life occurred about ten o’clock last night as the Belt line car was coming through Wynnton. Bassett and a party of friends were enjoying a trolley ride, he being on the rear platform of the trailer. The platform was crowded at the time and in some manner the live wire carrying the current of approximately 110 volts had become misplaced from the socket in which it rests.
According to the story of an eye-witness Bassett reached up and caught hold of the end of the wire, evidently thinking it was harmless, or perhaps was playing with it. Immediately he received a shock, which penetrated his whole system, and fainted away. His friends became alarmed at once and laid him out on the floor, where an attempt was begun by working his arms up and down on his chest to restore respiration. It took several minutes to unclasp his hand from the wire.
When the car reached the transfer station he was carried into the City Drug Store where Drs. Anderson and DesPortes were immediately summoned. A capsule of amynitrate was broken and held to his nose, which seemed to revive him immediately. He opened his eyes and his breathing became easier. His face and neck were bathed in cold water and by 11 o’clock he was so much improved that he was carried to his home on Tenth avenue and Fourteenth street. On arriving at the home Bassett was able to walk a little and it is thought that he will get over the shock in a few days.
