He was a native of Spring Hope and a machinist for the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, with 35 years of service. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church. A funeral was conducted at 10 a.m. today at Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News. A graveside service was conducted at 3 p.m. in the Peachtree Baptist Church Cemetery near Nashville. Rev. Robert McCormick officiated. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth J. Basset; two daughters, Mrs. Vanessa Leigh Bass and Cathy Ann Bass, both of the home; four brothers, Robert H. Bass of Newport News, Va., James Cecil Bass, Willie H. Bass and Paul M. Bass, all of Spring Hope.
