      Alan Richard Bass

Chapman - Alan Richard Bass passed away on July 27, 2023. Alan was born on March 24, 1948, in Randolf Vermont to Edmund and Laura Denton Bass. They were divorced when Alan was about one year old. His father remarried to Grace Stockfish, and they operated a dairy farm. They were divorced when Alan was about 10 years old. Alan lived with his stepmother until she moved back to Maine, where she was born. Alan worked on several dairy farms in the Randolph area, living with his grandparents and Aunt Margaret until his graduation from Braintree-Randolph Highschool in 1967.

Alan enlisted in the Army in January of 1968. He had his training at Rutgers Aviation Base in Alabama, as an Aircraft Crew-Chief. He served in Vietnam for over 2 years and flew many missions in the Mekong Delta. After discharge from the military, he went back to Vermont, and worked for 9 years in maintenance at the South Woodstock Country School. Alan decided to re-enter the aviation field, attending schools and earning his licenses as an aircraft mechanic and inspector. He worked in Wyoming for several years and was then transferred to Colorado. During his life, he has been to just about every state in the country.

In his travels, he crossed paths with many celebrities, including Joe Nameth, William "The Frig" Perry of the Chicago Bears, and Charles Bronson, just to name a few. His most memorable encounter was when he was driving from Denver, to the East Coast and stopped at a Holiday Inn for breakfast. "Willie Nelson came in and sat at the table next to mine. We chatted for a few minutes, and I shook his hand when I left. Willie was a very polite and soft-spoken gentleman."

In 1983, Alan moved to Bangor, and worked for Bar Harbor Airlines. Having hunted and fished his entire life, he transferred to "The County" to enjoy them further. Alan was the aircraft mechanic for Eastern Express & Continental Express until they pulled out in 1991. He then started working for the Presque Isle Housing Authority as a maintenance technician in 1992 until his retirement in 2010.

In 1988, he married Tilda Jaundreau Curtis. They built their home in West Chapman. They enjoyed using unique woodworking for the interior design. Alan was a good finish carpenter with an eye for convenience.

Alan is survived by his wife; a brother, Carlton and Mary Bass from Randolph, VT; a sister, Ellen and Chandler Nims from Essex J.C.T. Vermont; a wonderful Aunt Margaret LaBarge from Randolph, VT; two stepsisters, Carol Troup and husband, Robert, from Sebring, FL, and Kathy Young and husband, Peter, from Spring Field, VT; two stepchildren, Donald and Denise Levesque, their son, Jacob, from Orrington, ME; a stepdaughter, Candy Everett and Jeffery, their children, Molly, Ben, and Emma, Molly Everett's three children, Charlotte, Oliver, and Sophia; five half brothers and sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
