Mary Ellen Bass Dew, 86, peacefully transitioned to a better place on Sunday, February 28, 2021. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend who will be dearly missed.
Affectionately known as ?Granny? to many; she was a kind, caring and generous person. She was far happier to be taking care of someone else than to take care of herself.
Born on September 30, 1934 in Goldsboro, North Carolina, Mary was the sixth and last daughter born to Leslie and Pearl Bass. She out- lived her parents and all five of her sisters (Zula, Rae, Hilda, Annie and Bell).
Mary married Bertram O. Dew (Greek) in 1950; and they celebrated over 50 years of marriage until his death in 2005. Two adult sons (Bert and Will) as well as two grandchildren (Bert III and an infant girl) preceded her in death.
She is survived by one son, Ricky Allen Dew and wife Karen; one daughter, Brenda Dew Roberson (Gerber) and husband Mark Gerber; Grandchildren: Rainy, Karen, Allen (Crystal) and Grace (Curtis). She is also survived by several great-grandchildren along with nieces and nephews, and a sister-in-law (Linda Dew).
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at Carlisle Funeral Home with Pastor Raymond Whitehurst officiating. Entombment will follow in Edgecombe Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home.
The family is most grateful to her live-in care taker (Connie Rogers), her home care team from Vidant Home Health and Hospice, and for the daily visits from her special niece (Betty Kaye Matthews).
