      Ernest W. Bass

      The Rev. Ernest W. Bass, died February 22, at Hospice of the Golden Isles after a brief illness. Mr. Bass was born March 25, 1939 in Gainesville, Fl, to the late Erwin Glen Bass and Elma Marie DeLoach Bass Jaco. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Erwin Dean Bass, Sr., and his paternal grandparents, Barney W. and Lucynthia Bass, and his maternal grandparents, Manning M. and Gracie DeLoach, and Myrtle L. Bass Pierce.

      Mr. Bass was a 1958 graduate of Ocala High School, Ocala, Fl, and a 1968 graduate of the University of South Florida with a BS Degree in Arts and English Education. He was a 1972 graduate of Southeastern Theological Seminary at Wake Forest, NC, serving Baptist churches in Florida, North Carolina and Virginia, during his seminary years and upon graduation. In 1981, he became a member of the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. During his active pastorate he served the Meigs/Ochloknee Charge (Thomasville), Bemiss (Valdosta), Whitefield (Savannah), South Side and Bloomfield/Aldersgate Charge (Macon), Wadley/Lamb's Chapel Charge (Dublin), Milan, Mt. Zion, and Midway Charge, Unadilla/Pinehurst Charge (Americus). Upon his retirement in 2005, he and his wife, Norma Kay, moved to their present home at St. Simons Island, where he served as pastor of the Arco United Methodist Church in Brunswick and the Jekyll Island Church. While serving both churches, he was the part time chaplain for Magnolia Manor where he was able to continue to share his love and compassion with the residents.

      It was his great privilege and honor to be a part of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society (where he was known by his childhood nickname of Buddy) and to facilitate a memorial in her memory at the Grandfather Orphanage in Banner Elk, NC, where she lived in a cabin on the property during the writing of "A Mother in Manville". In 2009, he and his friend, the late Reverend William Warnock had the privilege of attending the Oxford Roundtable in Oxford, England as International Students.

      Mr. Bass is survived by his wife, Norma Kay, and five children, Tim (Patricia) of Folkston, GA, Mark (MaryLynn) of Savannah, GA, Marvelynn Joy Bass Owens (Marty) of Moniac, GA, Matt Miller (Kimberly) of Snellville, GA, and Jessica Miller Guillaume (Dennis) of Ellerslie, GA, and his much loved and cherished thirteen grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Charles 'Teddy" Bass (June) of Anthony, FL, and several cousins throughout the state of Florida.

      Visitation will be held Thurs., Feb. 23, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Chapman Funeral Chapel in Brunswick with funeral services being held Fri., Feb. 24, at 11:00 am at Wesley United Methodist Church at Frederica, on St. Simons Island, with the Rev. Drs John A. Stephens and Richard T. Mitchell, Jr., and cousin, the Rev. Ernest M. DeLoach, Jr. of Key West, FL, presiding. There will also be a visitation of Friday, Feb. 24, from 6:30 until 8:00 pm, at Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home in Unadilla, GA, with graveside services being held Sat., Feb. 25, at 2:00 pm at Elko City Cemetery in Elko, GA.

      In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations in Ernest's memory to Wesley United Methodist Church at Frederica youth's mission trip to Peru, 6520 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island, GA 31522, or Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525.
