United Grocer?s Fred C. Gast Dies
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Adams Chapel of River View Cemetery for Fred C. Gast Sr., general manager of United Grocers Inc. from 1968 until his retirement in 1978, who died Saturday in a Portland hospital at the age of 70.
Mr. Gast, a Northwest Portland resident, was treasurer of the Japanese Garden Society, a former president of the Financial Executive Institute and a past director and treasurer of the Sunshine Division of the Portland Police Bureau. He also was an officer of Ugic Ltd, United Supermarket Investment Co., Northwest Grocery Co., and a director of Cooperative Food Distributors of America, Western Food Corp. and Pacific Western Bank.
A native of Benton Harbor, Mich., Mr. Gast spent five years in the San Francisco and Portland offices of International Business Machines Corp.
In 1939, he was employed by the state of Oregon and became controller and assistant commissioner in charge of fiscal operations for the State Industrial Accident Commission.
He joined United Grocers in 1951 as office manager and also served as assistant general manager until 1968, when he was appointed executive vice president and general manager.
Mr. Gast was a member of the Columbia Edgewater Country Club and Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are two son, Fred C. Jr. and Stefan P., both of Portland; two brothers, Garret A. and Gaydon, both of San Francisco; and two grandchildren.
The family suggests remembrances be to the Japanese Garden Society, Providence Medical Foundation or the Sunshine Division of the Portland Police Bureau.
