BASS, David Eugene, 76, of Mechanicsville, Va., passed away unexpectedly into the arms of his Lord on April 22, 2011. Born on September 14, 1934 in rural Chesterfield County, he was an uncomplicated man who clung to the simplicity of his roots. A 1956 graduate of VPI, he was a member of the Army ROTC leaving school with a rank of Lieutenant. He served active duty at Ft. Sill, Okla., and several years of Reserve duty in Richmond. His college degree led to a long career as an independent accountant, with a varied and numerous list of clients. He loved God, cherished his family and valued his church family, and the many friends he had. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Bertelle and Mary Elizabeth Bailey Bass. David is survived by his wife, Peggy Watkins Bass; sisters, Betty B. Goode and Joy B. (Walter) Mitterer; his aunt, Marguerite Bendall; his children, Barbara B. (Buddy) Blankenship, Leanne B. Follis, John D. (Valerie) Bass, Eric K. Bass and Sheri (Lewis) Daniel; his stepchildren, G. Neal (Kim) Whitlow, Eric W. (Janet) Whitlow, Scott F. Whitlow, Tracy R. (Danielle) Whitlow, Evelyn V. Whitlow, Keith H. (Jennie) Whitlow and Deborah W. (Jonathan) Lumpkin; his grandchildren, Stephanie (Jerry) Blankenship-Stauffer, Jonathan Blankenship, Katie Follis, John Tyler Ripley Bass, Holden Bass, Austin Bass, Megan Daniel, Ashley Whitlow, Shane Whitlow, Jason Whitlow, Thomas Whitlow, Tyler Whitlow, Kristin Whitlow, Brett Whitlow, Taylor Whitlow and Rebecca Whitlow; his two great-grandchildren, Ashlee Blankenship and Jerry Stauffer III. He is also survived by a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 25, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, April 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, April 27, 11 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 6818 W. Grace St., Richmond, Va. Interment to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Christ UMC Building Fund or a charity of your choice.
